NewOrder + Joy Division Live Set List Fantasy Draft v.1

If you’ve ever seen posts on social media that start off with one openly wondering what others would like their favorite bands to include in their live set lists, and then noticed these posts often went nowhere, join the club.

These did trigger an idea with us, though … and bear with us … what if they did go somewhere?

Which brings us to the NewOrder + Joy Division Live Set List Fantasy Draft! We came up with a system which allows 7 players to select songs in a wrap-around snake style (just like in online fantasy sports games), in order for all to create imaginary NewOrder + Joy Division live set lists. Each set list is comprised of 20 songs: a) 15-16 New Order songs; and b) 4-5 Joy Division songs.

The process involves having an online draft night where we all come together to select our songs, share stories, and all in all have a blast in the company of other super fans. Then, we each go off and craft our set lists to be shared with the rest of the group. Next, we all take time to listen to these set lists and rank them from most to least amazing because let’s face it, they’re all great. Finally, a winner is crowned and earns our undying admiration.

In versions 1 and 2 of the Depeche Mode ones we did, we were really testing the system out. Seeing what worked, what didn’t, what could be better, and what new things we could incorporate. With version 3, we took our set lists to internet radio and allowed the whole world to listen in to our creations for the first time which added an extra layer of excitement to the game. Below, we will recap the group’s set lists.

Each set list will be added the day after it airs in full.

9/13 Day 6 – Ronnie Galvan & The Autodrafts presents
“Industrial Overload Tour”
YouTube on demand

The math behind Ronni Galvan & The Autodrafts set list order. This group of songs got 5 which have never been played by NewOrder live before (Are You Ready For This?, Avalanche, Dead Souls, Passover, and Inside the Line), so let’s set those aside for now to be plugged in later where gaps appear with the others.

Quarter 1 – Only 2 songs definitively stake their claim to this area: Elegia and Crystal. Both have been played at extremely high rates in this quarter (90% and 91%, respectively). But Elegia takes the leadoff spot because its placement score is slightly higher (11% position percentile vs. 13% PP). That leaves 3 spots here up for grabs. Let’s come back to this later.

Quarter 2 – This is a log jam of a quarter with 7 of the songs in this set having been played in this quadrant over 50% of the time historically.
Working Overtime – 100%
Isolation – 89%
60 Miles Per Hour – 80%
Krafty – 72%
These Days – 63%
Lonesome Tonight – 53%
Sooner Than You Think – 52%

So, let’s keep the top 5 and put the bottom 2 in their second most populated quarter. For Lonesome Tonight, that moves it down to Quarter 3 (28%). Whereas Sooner Than You Think moves up to Quarter 1 (25%).

In terms of position percentile, Quarter 2 looks like this:
These Days – PP 29%
Isolation – PP 33%
Working Overtime – PP 40%
Krafty – PP 41%
60 Miles Per Hour – PP 45%

This means that These Days and Isolation would form a Joy Division block to kick off Quarter 2 followed by the other 3 as these two are appearing earlier in sets historically. As a result, Quarter 2 is locked into place and none of the “Never Played” songs can go here.

Quarter 3 – Moving Lonesome Tonight down to its second most frequent quarter takes up one spot. The only other 2 songs in this collection with strong ties to Quarter 3 are Jetstream (89%) and Mesh (46%). Taking a step back and looking ahead to what will be a crowded Quarter 4, we can see that while Denial and Temptation have most of their plays in Q4, their position percentile puts them actually right at the end of Q3 or right on the cusp (71% and 75%, respectively). Thus, we have this block for Quarter 3:
Mesh – PP 50%
Lonesome Tonight – PP – 53%
Jetstream – PP- 53%
Denial – PP – 71%
Temptation – PP – 75%

Quarter 4 – Two of the 20 songs that Autodraft selected are solidly in Q4: Fine Time (98%) and Sister Ray (85%). The math puts Sister Ray as the set closer as its second most frequently played area is Q3, whereas Fine Time’s second most frequent is Q1, actually. That leaves 3 slots. As per the rules, we’re looking for 2-3 Joy Division songs in the encore. In the remaining “Never Played” songs, we have 3 Joy Division tracks and 2 NewOrder, one being an instrumental.

Never Played – At this point, we have 5 slots open: 2 in Q1, and 3 in Q4. We know that Q2 has 2 Joy Division songs to start that quad, so it would make sense to put another just before it and use the instrumental (Avalanche) as the segue from Q3 to Q4. The 2 Joy Division songs in Q2 are of the short, punky variety which would work with Inside The Line well. Whereas, the heavy and meatier Dead Souls into Passover could add heft to the encore as a kind of zombies + Easter combination following Avalanche and before Fine Time. That leaves Are You Ready For This? which we can slot in before Inside the Line as a Movement era retro transition into the first Joy Division section. All told, that leaves us with …
